How to register a free .com.np domain — documents, name servers, the cover letter (with a template), Mercantile's approval process, and the rules that get applications rejected.
A .com.np domain is free, official, and carries a kind of local trust no global TLD matches —
but the application is a manual document review, and most rejections come from four avoidable
mistakes. This guide walks the full process at register.com.np and includes a cover-letter
template you can adapt.
Rules and forms occasionally change. The registry is authoritative: register.com.np, run by Mercantile Communication (hostmaster@mercantile.com.np). Treat this guide as the map, not the law.
Who can register what
The registry ties names to identity documents, which is why the system works:
- Individuals can register a domain matching their own name — the way your name appears in
English on your citizenship certificate. Ram Bahadur Shrestha can apply for
ramshrestha.com.np-style names that reasonably transliterate his documents. - Organisations register a domain matching their registered business name, against the company or firm registration certificate.
You cannot register a random brand name under .com.np as an individual, and that constraint is the feature: a .com.np domain is documentation-backed, which is where its trust comes from.
Step by step
- Check availability at register.com.np — enter the name without
wwwor the extension. - Prepare your DNS first. The application requires name-server records, which means you need hosting or a DNS service in place before applying. Any host from our hosting shortlist provides nameservers at signup; Cloudflare’s free tier also works if you only want DNS for now. Note the two nameserver hostnames.
- Create an account on register.com.np and start the application for your chosen name.
- Fill in registrant details exactly as they appear on your documents — name spelling, address, everything. This is not a formality; it is the review criterion.
- Upload your citizenship certificate (both sides, individual) or company registration certificate (organisation). Scans must be legible — cropped phone photos cause rejections.
- Enter the nameservers from step 2.
- Write the cover letter (template below), address it to the hostmaster, and submit.
- Wait for the manual review. Approvals typically take a few working days; rejections come with a reason — fix it and reapply. Since late 2024 the registry has also been running domain reverification, so keep your registered contact email active long after approval.
The cover letter, with a template
Every application includes a cover letter to the hostmaster stating who you are and what the domain is for. It is one paragraph — but it is where careless applications die. Adapt this:

Subject: Application for registration of yourname.com.np
Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to register the domain yourname.com.np for my personal
website and portfolio. The domain corresponds to my name as it appears
on my citizenship certificate, a scanned copy of which is attached with
this application. The name servers for the domain are
ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ram Bahadur Shrestha

For an organisation, write it on company letterhead, name the registered entity, reference the attached registration certificate, and describe the intended use (company website, product site). Keep it factual and short — the reviewer wants purpose and matching documents, not prose.
After approval
Point the domain at your hosting’s nameservers (or the DNS service you chose), let DNS propagate, and publish. Our domain registration overview covers the ownership rules that matter from day one — keep the domain in your own account, not your developer’s. And because .com.np is free but manual, many Nepali businesses register both a .com (for global credibility) and the .com.np (for local trust), with one redirecting to the other.
A note from this domain’s history
Podamibe Nepal ran on podamibe.net and podamibenepal.com back when a .com.np was the only free option most students had — and the cover-letter ritual has barely changed since. What changed is everything you connect the domain to: hosting is cheaper, DNS is free, and the whole stack around a free domain now costs less in a year than one month of hosting did in 2015. The domain ritual survived because the trust it encodes still matters.
FAQ
Is a .com.np domain really free?
Yes — the .np country registry, operated by Mercantile Communication, does not charge a registration fee for .com.np domains. The costs you may pay are for what points at the domain: hosting, or DNS/CDN services.
What documents are required?
For individuals: a scan of both sides of your citizenship certificate. For organisations: the company/firm registration certificate. Plus name-server records for the domain and a cover letter addressed to the hostmaster explaining the purpose of the registration.
Why was my application rejected?
The usual causes: the requested name does not match your documents (personal names must match your citizenship certificate's transliteration), unreadable or cropped document scans, missing name-server records, or a cover letter that does not state the purpose. Fix the specific issue and reapply — rejections are not permanent.
